Shepherds Conference

We just finished making all the reservations for Adam, Art and Bill (the Elder board of Nenana Community Church) to attend this year’s Shepherd’s Conference. Adam went with with a friend last year and really enjoyed it. He talked so much about it that he convinced the other guys that they should go with him this year.

Too Cold To Fly

This January is setting up to be one of the coldest on record here in the interior of Alaska, according to an article in today’s Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. It has been colder than -20f or it will warm up then snow for what seems like an eternity. What this has meant for us is that it has been too cold to travel by plane. So today as I’m clearing my desk of months of backed-up paper work, wishing that I could be out visiting folks in the bush, I am watching some of the videos on our YouTube channel. This video is the most popular of all and for good reason, bright sun, fresh powder and a smooth touchdown (if I say so myself).

The Bluegrass Hour

This week on the Bluegrass Hour a listener had requested, You Can’t Take It With You When You Go. This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately.

It is getting harder and harder to save money with cost going up and the pitiful return of savings accounts and other investments. What is the balance between being a miser so you can’t live in the present and spending it all like a wild man and having nothing for a rainy day? Obviously those are two big extreme ends of the problem. The Bible tells us in Matthew 6 that where our treasure is there our heart will be also, and that you can’t serve both God and money. I don’t want to miss out on making memories with the kids but I don’t want to be completely destitute when an unforeseen calamity strikes. Where is the balance when there is very little margin in the budget? These are the things I’ve been thinking about lately…

Sabrina and I are in Anchorage for a couple days of meetings. It’s fun to have her along and it’s great to have a “personal assistant!”

Merry Christmas

Christmas Eve I was able to do a special Christmas program for the Bluegrass Hour. According to feedback I have received there were a lot of folks listening in over the internet. One friend from Ecuador even called to let me know that they were listening.

With Christmas being on a Sunday this year there was much discussion about the timing for opening the gifts. We decided after lunch much to the dismay of the girls. As you can see from the picture Sabrina, Hattie, Natalie and Miriam comprised the “girls choir” at church. Sabrina and Miriam also played a special song on the piano as well.

We pray that you had an opportunity to celebrate the saviors birth in a special way this year.

I am always amazed by the beauty God has displayed in His creation. The hills covered with snow and the low angle light made for beautiful flight today. I was able to go get Roger and Carole Huntington back to Kokrine Hills after a week of ministry with the youth of Buckland.

Fog

The weather was not the best for the trip yesterday. I had planned to go visit friends in the bush, read about the reason for the trip in this post. Warm winds from the south and cold air on the surface caused a large area of fog to develop rather quickly and I had to keep changing plans.
